ABOUT

GOT A QUESTION? ASK US ANYTHING.

Badlands Brewery was established in 2010 by long-time home-brewer, Jon Shiner, who has been executing his passion for brewing ‘dangerously drinkable’ beers ever since.

Funded on a shoestring as part of Jon’s corporate-life escape plan. Badlands has grown organically, consistently and impressively.

Our home is on the traditional lands of the Wiradjuri people, to the west of The Great Dividing Range, in the foothills of Mt Canobolas, in Orange, NSW. Our region is known for its rich food and wine culture and is rapidly becoming a mecca for craft beer lovers. All Badlands Brewery’s core beers are made only with malted wheat and barley, water, yeast and hops and come to you as nature intended – unfiltered and free of preservatives and additives. They will never contain cheap adjuncts favoured by the larger breweries, such as corn, rice or cane sugar and are hand-crafted, a 1000lt a time on a manual, hands-on brewhouse.

Badlands original mission statement conceived in 2009 holds true today:

"To produce world-class, nationally recognised, full-flavoured premium beers, using the finest ingredients and best practice brewing processes. To be an active and well-respected member of the local community supporting cultural and charitable local causes. To be an environmentally responsible company minimising energy, water and waste and to be a fun and challenging employer providing opportunities for staff to develop and progress."
DANGEROUSLY
DRINKABLE

The brewery tag line "dangerously drinkable" encapsulates what drives us. Jon's brewing philosophy is that Badlands' Beers should be "satisfying, refreshing and interesting to the bottom of the third glass".

Jon’s ‘light-bulb’ moment occurred, as is common for most important decisions in life, over a beer in around 2002. Jon had at this stage been home brewing for a number of years.  He realised two things that night that would change his life path a) he had a good palate for beer and b) he had a potentially viable business model for a microbrewery - “owner/brewer”.

At the time there were around 60 breweries in the whole of Australia, including the ‘big boys’. All these years later with over 600 breweries and seemingly at least one new one opening each week, the owner/brewer model is still a relatively rare phenomenon.  This model has a number of advantages for you, the discerning drinker:

  • Beer quality is the heart, soul and main priority of everything we do
  • Adventurism and our ability to push boundaries is not constrained by accountants or pencil pushers influencing company direction
  • The fun, passion and desire to create that started the Badlands journey is still, and always will be, at the heart of all decision making

DISTRIBUTION

Today, twenty years after the germ of an idea was born, Badlands is distributed in 4 states/territories.  Since our first batch in 2010 we have gone from one man with one beer pounding the pavements of NSW to a team today of 5 production staff with beer in some of the best venues in Australia. Including: Wolgan Valley Emirates 5 star resort, The Old Canberra Inn, The Hydro Majestic, Lilianfels, The Baxter Inn (top 50 bars in the world and consistently picked as Best bar in Australia) and The Lord Dudley to cherry-pick a handful. In our region we are in the award-winning hatted restaurants Lolli Redinis and Tonic.

Each year Badlands release around 15-20 new beers. From lagers and pale ales to sours, chocolate porters and super-hop-charged hazy beers.  In 2020 to mark it’s first decade in the business it released the 'world first' “BADASS” - 4 different strong stouts.  ‘a drinkable history of a beer in four steps’.

AWARDS

Badlands took home its largest medal haul in its history winning 2 silver medals and 5 bronze medals in the 2020 Independent Beer Awards.

In November 2020, Badlands discovered its New World Pilsener had been chosen in The Weekend Australian Magazine by Peter Lalor - (Chief Beer Writer for The Australian), as one of the top 20 beers of the year. In interview Peter singled out our Pilsener as his absolute favourite beer of the year.

In November 2021 our New World Pilsener again featured in the “Top 20 Beers of the year”.

To our friends that for years have supported, drunk and continue to seek out Badlands beers – thanks!  For those new customers only beginning to discover our ‘dangerously drinkable’ beers, welcome to our brewing family and enjoy the journey.

ENVIRONMENT
COMMUNITY
OUR COMMITMENT TO OUR ENVIRONMENT AND OUR COMMUNITY

Here at Badlands we revel in playing an active part in the Orange community and the wider craft beer community.  Whether it is donating beer to local charitable causes such as the annual local charity balls (Ronald McDonald House and White Tie Ball) or brewing one-off batches of beer such as our “Recovery Beer” brewed with assistance from our awesome suppliers and donated to venues to raise money for Bush Fire charities in the wake of the devastating fires of 2019/20.  We love to be involved!

We also love supporting our favourite sporting clubs. Our major sponsorship of Orange Mountain Biking Club has entered its 4th year and we are set to embark on a new relationship with Orange City Rugy Union Club as a major shirt sponsor and preferred beer supplier. We look forward to announcing more community support arrangements shortly with the opening of The Taproom.

We always put our hand up when asked for “Karma Kegs” to support members of the brewing community that are struggling. If in need, please ask!

Our commitment to the environment, embedded in our mission statement, means we operate on a default position of minimising our impact on the earth.  We do this with programs to minimise our use of plastic; our brewery spent grain and liquid waste water is utilised by local farming families as stock feed; our water usage is approximately 40% of the average craft brewery*; our can clips are made from 100% recycled milk bottles and as much as possible these are used multiple times and recycled from our customers.  The construction of our new brewery and taproom will continue to build on our principles of treading lightly and using less for example by installing under floor heating in the bar and using low energy heat pumps to warm the water.

*water to beer ratio of around 3:1 compared to industry average of 7:1

COMMUNITY

A great pleasure of the creative beer process is collaborating with incredible, passionate, small producers to create something wonderful, unique and as distant from ‘factory beer’ as can be.  This has led to many great relationships and unique beers over the years.  From small vanilla plantations in FNQ, to truffle-growers in Orange, from single-origin cacao growers to local artisanal coffee roasters. Distillers, cherry farmers, fig growers, wine makers, native bush tucker suppliers have all been a part of Badlands beer collaborations over the years.  A highlight of the Badlands brewing calendar is an annual trip to Tallaganda Mountain, 50km out of Braidwood to pick fresh hops from our mates at Tallaganda Hops’ small hop grove.  It’s an amazing opportunity for the brew team to be part of the agricultural and harvest process.  We shoot back to Orange the next morning to use the hops in our “Hop Harvest beer” released in March each year.

We are supportive and welcoming of the LGBTQI community and support all initiatives to promote a more inclusive and tolerant society.

We acknowledge the Wiradjuri people as the traditional custodians of the land on which we brew. We pay our respects to them and to their elders both past and present and extend that respect to all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples throughout the land.
