Passion and commitment can be tired and overused terms, exploited by overzealous sporting commentators, advertisers or politicians. It can take the occasional emergence of something original and great, an enterprise born of genuine hard work and love to remind us what these terms really mean.
Combining enormous energy and ingenuity, a pride in the craft of brewing and a passion for spreading the gospel of great beer, Badlands Brewery is one of these remarkable and original stories that Australians love to cherish and celebrate.
Founded in the beautiful and vibrant rural town of Orange, Badlands Brewery has emerged as an energetic young player in the Australian brewing scene.
The road to the establishment of the brewery has been colourful and eventful. The story of Badlands Brewery is inextricably linked with the journey of its Founder and Head Brewer Jon Shiner.
As a youth Jon earned the respect and appreciation of his friends as a capable home-brewer. Despite the sticky swamps of kitchen spillages and the tendency for consumption to befuddle the senses and blur the learning curve, this talent progressively evolved.
With the aid of research, experimentation and the encouragement and support of fellow-brewers Jon’s brewing apprenticeship blossomed. The pursuit of the perfect brew culminated in years of study achieving a post-grad qualification in Brewing at The Univeristy of Ballarat. At this juncture the dream of founding Badlands Brewery was becoming reality.
The efforts that followed to establish the Brewery were gargantuan. There was significant encouragement to be found in the way the Badlands beer was always enthusiastically received. There were also setbacks and hurdles to be overcome however as the fledgling business was wounded by false dawns and bureaucratic challenges.
The turning point for the business was the selection of Orange as home-base for the brewery. This region is famed for its quality produce, spectacular cool-climate wines and burgeoning food and tourism industries.
Just as Jon quickly embraced the benefits and potential of Orange for his new business, the town itself embraces its own producers and local businesses. This is epitomised by the iconic local business Totally Local, which specialises in providing fresh produce from the local area. Badlands Brewery has formed a partnership with Totally Local and the brewery is based at their distinctive, character-filled premises on the outskirts of Orange.
The recent launch of the Badlands Pale Ale represents the latest and most exciting chapter for Badlands Brewery. The caps are coming off the first beers, unleashing the refreshing and dangerously drinkable goodness onto an unsuspecting and cosseted public.
The upcoming months will see the full commissioning of the brewery in Orange and the opening of the Badlands Bar within the soon-to-be-opened Cool Room Cafe at Totally Local. You can follow the rest of this story as it unfolds on the Badlands Blog, “Bad Press”
